Irún
With over 2,000 years of history, Irún has been the setting for epic battles, such as the Battle of San Marcial in 1522, now celebrated as a regional holiday commemorating the victory of Irún’s troops over the French. Despite the destruction of much of its heritage in successive battles, Irún still preserves important landmarks, including:
● The Hermitage of Santa Elena
● The Church of Juncal, home to the oldest Gothic image in Gipuzkoa
● The Renaissance-style Urdanibia Palace
Other highlights reflecting the city's rich history and natural beauty include Mount San Marcial and its hermitage, as well as a viewpoint overlooking the Bay of Txingudi.
Roman Past
The foundation of the city dates back to the 1st century BC, when the Roman Empire established a settlement in Basque territory. Initially, the city was known as Oiasso.
In recent decades, archaeological research has confirmed the city's presence in classical sources. The Roman legacy endures through numerous remains, including:
● The necropolis at Santa Elena Hermitage
● Mining operations around Aiako Harria
● The port, discovered in Santiago and Tadeo Murgia streets
● The baths, located behind what is now the Oiasso Roman Museum
Bidasoa Greenway
The Bidasoa Greenway is a nearly 40 km route along the Bidasoa River, stretching from Oieregi, in Navarre, to Behobia-Irun, where our hotel is located.
This scenic trail follows the former route of the "Tren Txikito" and features minimal elevation changes over its 40 km. It is ideal for walking part of the route or, for those seeking a more active experience, cycling the entire path.
The lush riverside landscapes provide breathtaking views, fully immersing you in the natural beauty of the Bidasoa region.
Donosti-San Sebastian
San Sebastián, or Donostia in Basque, is a true coastal gem in the Basque Country, renowned for its golden beaches, stunning architecture, and vibrant culinary scene.
● La Concha Beach, with its distinctive shell-shaped bay, is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches.
● Mount Igueldo offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city.
● The Old Town (Parte Vieja) is famous for its pintxos bars, where visitors can savor some of the best gastronomy in the region.
San Sebastián also hosts prestigious festivals, such as the International Film Festival and the Jazz Festival, alongside a rich cultural offering of museums and theaters.
A captivating destination, perfect for gastronomy, beaches, culture, and festivals.
Hondarribia
The picturesque town of Hondarribia is located north of Irún, just a 15-minute drive from our hotel. Wandering through its medieval Old Town feels like stepping back in time, with its cobbled streets and well-preserved grid layout showcasing the city's rich cultural heritage.
At the heart of the Plaza de Armas, the main square, stands the Castle of Charles V, an imposing 10th-century fortress that now operates as a Parador.
Another highlight is the port, one of the most charming on the Basque coast. Here, colorful fishing boats and traditional fishermen’s houses create a picture-perfect scene, ideal for a seaside stroll or for sampling local cuisine at one of its many restaurants.
Pasajes de San Juan
Located 20 km from our hotel, Pasajes de San Juan is a must-visit destination. This quaint fishing village is nestled in the Oyarzun estuary, offering a unique and picturesque setting.
Its houses seem to hang over the water, creating a stunning coastal view. A single street, winding along the shoreline, runs from end to end, passing through four stone arches, flanked by heraldic facades of noble palaces and historic seafaring houses.
The town is also home to the Casa de Victor Hugo, a house-museum dedicated to the famous French writer, who spent time here and was deeply inspired by its beauty and atmosphere. From its windows, visitors can gaze at the estuary and understand why Hugo was so fascinated by this hidden gem of the Basque Country.

The waters of Biarritz are not only famous for surfing but also for their therapeutic properties. In the 19th century, doctors recommended bathing in Biarritz for its healing effects. Today, thalassotherapy (seawater therapy) remains a major attraction, making Biarritz home to one of Europe's most important thalassotherapy centers.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, known as Donibane Lohizune in Basque, is one of the most visited towns in Iparralde. Its vast beach, promenade, urban center, and port charm visitors to this idyllic spot on the Basque coast. Its fishing port, filled with small boats, reflects the town’s deep-rooted seafaring tradition. More than just a workplace for fishermen, the port is a lively meeting point for both locals and visitors who seek to experience the authenticity of coastal life.
