Irún
Irún, with over 2,000 years of history, has been the setting for epic battles like the Battle of San Marcial in 1522, now celebrated as a regional holiday commemorating the victory of Irún troops over the French. Despite much of its heritage being destroyed in successive battles fought here, Irún still retains landmarks such as the Hermitage of Santa Elena, the Church of Juncal housing the oldest Gothic image in Gipuzkoa, and the Renaissance Urdanibia Palace.
The Mount and Hermitage of San Marcial, along with a viewpoint overlooking the Bay of Txingudi, are other highlights reflecting the city's rich history and natural beauty.
Roman Past
The city's foundation dates back to the 1st century BC when the Roman Empire settled in Basque lands. Initially, the city was known as Oiasso.
Recent decades of archaeological research have identified the city mentioned in classical sources. The Roman legacy still lives on in numerous remains, including the necropolis at Santa Elena Hermitage, mining operations around Aiako Harria, the port found in Santiago and Tadeo Murgia streets, and the baths behind the current Oiasso Roman Museum.
Bidasoa Greenway
The Bidasoa Greenway is a nearly 40km route along the Bidasoa River, running from Oieregi in Navarre to Behobia-Irun, where our hotel is located.
The route follows the old path of the "Tren txikito" and has hardly any elevation over its 40km. The route is ideal for walking a section or, for those more active, cycling through the entire path.
The lush riverside landscapes will offer you breath-taking views and fully immerse you in the nature of the Bidasoa region.
Donosti-San Sebastian
San Sebastian, or Donostia in Basque, is a coastal gem in the Basque Country, famous for its golden beaches, stunning architecture, and vibrant culinary scene. La Concha Beach, with its shell-shaped bay, is one of the most beautiful in Europe. Mount Igueldo offers spectacular panoramic views of the city. The old town, with its narrow streets filled with pintxos bars, is renowned for its exquisite gastronomy.
San Sebastian is also known for its festivals, such as the International Film Festival and the Jazz Festival, along with its rich cultural offering of museums and theatres.
It is a captivating tourist destination, perfect for enjoying gastronomy, beaches, culture and festivals.
Hondarribia
The picturesque town of Hondarribia is located north of Irun, just a 15-minute drive from our hotel. Strolling through its medieval old town feels like stepping back in time, with its cobbled streets and grid layout reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage. At the Plaza de Armas, the heart of the old town, stands the Castle of Charles V, an imposing fortress from the 10th century that now operates as a Parador.
Another highlight of Hondarribia is its port, one of the most picturesque on the Basque coast. Here, colourful fishing boats and traditional fishermen's houses create a unique postcard scene, perfect for enjoying a seaside stroll or sampling the local cuisine at one of its many restaurants.
Pasajes de San Juan
This charming small town is located 20 km from our hotel and is a must-visit. It is a fishing village nestled in the Oyarzun estuary. Its houses, hanging over the estuary, create the picturesque characteristic view of the town, which extends and winds following the coastline. A single street stretches from end to end, crossing four stone arches, flanked by heraldic facades of palaces and ancient noble and seafaring houses on both sides.
The town is also home to the Casa de Victor Hugo, a house-museum dedicated to the famous French writer who spent time here and was deeply inspired by the beauty and atmosphere of the place. From its windows, you can contemplate the estuary and understand why the celebrated writer was fascinated by this corner of the Basque Country.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, known as Donibane Lohizune in Basque, is one of the most visited towns in Iparralde. Its vast beach, promenade, urban centre, and port charm those who visit this idyllic spot on the Basque coast. Its fishing port, filled with small boats, reflects the town's seafaring tradition.
